How we score zero-turn mowers
Every mower gets a single 0–10 ZT Score — a weighted read of five things that actually matter when you're cutting grass week after week.
We research, we don't bench-test
We are a research-led site, not a test lab. We don't put every mower through our own field trial. Instead we read the manufacturer spec sheets, compare each machine against its direct rivals in the same class and price band, and weigh up what actual owners report after a full season of use. If we ever do get hands-on time with a machine, we'll say so plainly on that mower's page.
The five criteria
Deck design and steel gauge, blade tip speed, airflow, mulching and bagging capability — cross-checked against what owners consistently report about the finish.
Frame construction, deck gauge, spindles and transmission class. Commercial-grade hardware scores higher because it demonstrably lasts longer.
Seat type, suspension, vibration isolation and control ergonomics — the difference between a tolerable hour and a punishing one.
What you get for the money within its own class. A $3,000 residential mower isn't marked down for failing to be a $9,000 commercial one.
Setup, deck height adjustment, maintenance access and everyday handling.
Where our information comes from
Specifications come from the manufacturers' own published documentation. Where owners consistently report something the spec sheet doesn't tell you — a weak spot, a part that fails early, a deck that clogs in damp grass — we factor that in. Prices are indicative and move constantly by dealer, region and season, so treat them as a guide rather than a quote.
Owner ratings are kept separate
The ZT Score is our editorial assessment. Owner star ratings are shown alongside it but are never folded into it — so a wave of five-star reviews can't inflate our number, and you can weigh the two independently.
Every submitted review is moderated
Reviews are read by a human before they're published. We remove spam, promotional content and anything that isn't a genuine ownership experience. Once approved, a review updates that mower's owner rating automatically. We do not write owner reviews ourselves, and we do not publish reviews we can't believe are real.
When we get it wrong
Specs change mid-model-year and mistakes happen. If you spot something inaccurate, tell us and we'll fix it — corrections are cheaper than a bad reputation.
Reader-supported, editorially independent
Some links to retailers are affiliate links, and we may earn a commission if you buy through them — at no extra cost to you. That funding never affects a ZT Score or where a mower ranks. No manufacturer pays for a review, a score or a place in a ranking, and none of them sees a page before it goes live.
